Knitting Courses

I am currently (FEB 2026) teaching with Sacramento Free School and will again in F/W 26, but I also offer donation-based lessons for individuals, pairs (you and a buddy), and groups.

Absolute beginners seeking lessons have the option of a sliding-scale donation based kit or to build their own kit with a provided materials list from me ahead of the lessons.

For the progressed classes, students will be given a materials list with suggested yarns and tools for the project ahead of time.

Below you will find some of my offerings.

Knitting 1 – Foundations & Fundamentals

In this four-part course, you will learn how to make the foundational knit and purl stitches, how to start and finish a piece of knitting (cast-on/cast-off), how to create shapes with increase and decrease stitches, and essential knitting terminology so you can read and understand knitting patterns. The class includes patterns, video instructions to refer back to, and in some cases, materials for the craft.

Skill Level: no previous knowledge necessary

Time Commitment: Four classes, a week apart

Class Dates: CLASS FULL February 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th at 6PM

Course Details:

Class 1 – Learn the Knit Stitch

I set up your yarn and needles with stitches ready to go – this is standard practice for absolute beginners. You will learn how to make the stitches, and we will all practice together and learn about what’s ahead.

Class 2 – Casting-on and -off

Students bring their knitting from the previous class and we learn to cast-off. After that, we will get our new materials and instructions, and cast-on the next project.

Class 3 – Increasing and Decreasing

We will gather new materials and instructions, again, and cast-on for a project knit in the diagonal. This project will teach us how to create a shape through adding and subtracting stitches

Class 4 – The Purl Stitch

The last of our foundational skills is the purl stitch. We will practice this stitch by casting-on a swatch. From there, students will pick a final project and can cast-on together.

Ongoing

I will keep the group chat going and remain available for help when needed! Some students enjoy knitting meet-ups, as well.

Knitting 2 – Skill Building

Students will learn the skills necessary to making seamless hats, socks, sweaters, and how to embellish their knits with colorful motifs, lacework, and cables. Additionally, they will gain familiarity with tools and instructions for these more advanced techniques.

Skill Level: Knitting 1 Course OR knowledge of knitting, purling, casting on and off

Time Commitment: One month of weekly classes

Class Dates: TDB

Course Details:

This lesson plan is in progress, but will include knitting in the round (vs. knitting flat), two-color knitting, lace, and cables.

Sock Workshop

We will knit a pair of worsted weight socks on DPNs, so you can get a feel for sock needles before trying on teeny-tiny needles.

Time Commitment: Three 90-minute classes, a week apart

Class Dates: TBD

Course Details:

Self-Paced Study

For those that are at the beginning of their journey and want solo self-paced lessons with low-pressure, I offer individual assistance. You will learn the base skills necessary to advance as a knitter, from the stitches themselves, to how to successfully choose, begin, track, and finish projects on your own.

About the Instructor

Hi, I’m Stephanie! I learned to knit in 2004 and how to crochet in 2005. My knitting really took off during a stressful time in 2013, and it brought me a lot of comfort and joy. I started to share the journey on Blogspot and Instagram around that same time, in hopes of helping myself and others break through new skills in knitting. My knitting has ebbed and flowed over the years, and knowing the yarn and needles are there for me when I need them brings me a great deal of comfort.
